CHARACTER STUDY – The Ten Virgins
Introduction
The Parable of the Ten Virgins did not appear in isolation. It is part of Jesus' teaching on His second coming and the importance of living in constant readiness.
In Matthew 24, Jesus repeatedly warns His disciples that no one knows the day or the hour of His return (Matthew 24:36-44). He then tells the parable of the Faithful and Wise Servant (Matthew 24:45-51), where the servant is commended, not because the master returned quickly, but because he remained faithful during what seemed like a long delay.
Jesus continues this same theme in Matthew 25 with the Parable of the Ten Virgins. The turning point in the story is found in Matthew 25:5:
"The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep."
The problem was not that the bridegroom failed to come. The problem was that he came later than they expected.
The wise virgins prepared not only for his arrival but also for the possibility of a delay. The foolish virgins prepared only for what they thought would happen quickly.
Like the servants in Matthew 24, this parable reminds us that genuine faith is not measured by how enthusiastically we begin our walk with God, but by how faithfully we continue when God's timing does not match our expectations.
